The work is opening up again, and Fit2FlyTest are here to help with our gold-standard COVID tests for travel.

Whether you are travelling for a holiday or on a business trip, we have the testing kits you need. In this article, we will give you an overview of the COVID tests you will need if you want to travel abroad, and when you will need them.

Which COVID test will I need for international travel?

It all depends on where you are travelling to, and when. At the moment, the government has split countries into three categories – red, amber and green – and so the test you will need will depend on which list your country of travel is currently on.

What COVID tests for travel will you need to fly out of the UK?

Most airlines require you to take a PCR test before flying, and some countries also require a COVID test on entry. Fit2FlyTest’s Fit to Fly COVID test is a good option, as we process it quickly at our own labs – and it also includes a digital Fit to Fly Certificate ( a paper copy can be ordered for an additional £10).

You may still require a COVID test even if you have been vaccinated, as there has been no agreement on so-called “vaccination passports” yet – so make sure you check exactly what is required with your airline and the embassy for your destination country.

Grant Shapps, Secretary of State for Transport, recently suggested that UK holidaymakers would be able to prove their coronavirus status to destination countries on the green list, but the full details of this have not been revealed yet.

What COVID tests for travel will you need to return to the UK?

Your next steps when you return to the UK will be dictated by the country you are arriving back from. Countries are currently grouped as Green, Amber and Red – with different rules for each.

  • Green countries – take a Day 2 test when you arrive back in the UK. There is no need to quarantine unless your test result comes back positive
  • Amber countries – quarantine for 10 days, AND take a Day 2 and Day 8 Covid test. You can also choose to take a Test to Release test to potentially end your quarantine period early (on receipt of a negative test result)
  • Red countries – quarantine in a Government-managed hotel for 10 days (which will need to be booked and paid for before departure). You must also take a COVID test on Day 2 and Day 8.

Be organised

You will be asked for details of your COVID tests on your Passenger Locator Form, so make sure you have ordered your tests before you land back in the UK.
